Christchurch is set between the deep blue Pacific Ocean and the mighty snow-capped Southern Alps.  This is a vibrant, ever-changing city with inner city parks and gardens delightfully interwoven by the meandering Avon River.

Enjoy admission to the International Antarctic Centre today or tomorrow for an icy insight into this astounding continent.

Overnight: Christchurch

See, touch, feel and fall in love with Antarctica at the International Antarctic Centre where a slice of this astounding continent can be experienced. Brave an Antarctic storm, go off-road in a Hägglund Antarctic vehicle ride, befriend a husky sled dog and mingle with the little blue penguins. Experience Antarctica from all four dimensions and leave with a head full of knowledge and a heart full of love and inspiration. Just like the explorers before you.
Day 2
Christchurch - Glacier Region
Depart across the Canterbury Plains, a fertile patchwork made with every shade of green, through the spectacular scenery of Arthurs Pass National Park and on to the West Coast.  New Zealand’s rugged West Coast is a wild and untamed place known for its rivers, rainforests, glaciers and geological treasures.  Here, mighty rivers of solid white ice, relics of the world’s last ice-age, tumble down the rocky valleys.

Day 3

A temperate climate at a low altitude make Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers among the most convenient to visit in the world.  Steep valleys bear scars from where glaciers have retreated and advanced over millennia and here, the ice age is still underway.  This morning`s walk takes you to the face of the Franz Josef Glacier, the afternoon is free to explore or add another activity.  Overnight: Glacier Region

Visit Punakaiki Pancake Rocks or, for an absolute bucket list experience, add a scenic flight with a glacier landing and a thrilling hike to your itinerary. Overnight: Glacier Region

  • Driving in New Zealand:
    • Road Safety
      • t`s easy to underestimate driving times when looking at a map. Although distances may seem short, New Zealand roads often include hilly or winding terrain with sharp corners, slowing  down your journey. Allow plenty of time to get to your destination and drive carefully according to the weather conditions. Snow, ice and fog can be common in winter, especially in the South Island, around mountain passes
      • If you are surrounded by sheep or stock on country roads, drive slowly and take your direction from the farmer
      • Make sure that you have plenty of sleep before a long drive. Take regular breaks and pull over if you feel sleepy
      • Don`t leave valuables in your vehicle
    • Road Rules
      • In New Zealand, all motorists drive on the LEFT HAND SIDE of the road
      • When approaching a roundabout, always give way to traffic on your right
      • When the traffic light is red, you must stop. There is no left turn rule as in North America
      • Keep within speed limits. The maximum speed limit on open roads is 100km/h (approx 60m/h) and 50km/h in urban areas
      • Drivers and passengers must wear seat belts at all times, in both front and rear seats
      • Do not drink and drive.  Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a crime in New Zealand
      • Driving while using a hand-held cellphone is illegal in New Zealand
      • It is illegal to pass other cars where there is a yellow line in the middle of the road.  The yellow line indicates it is too dangerous to pass
      • You are required by law to carry your driver licence with you at all times
    • International Driving Licences and Permits
      • You can legally drive in New Zealand for up to 12 months if you have either a current driver`s licence from your home country or an International Driving Permit that is issued in English. If your licence is not in English, you must carry an authorised English translation with you
